Skill Standards

Skill Standards and Self Assessment for Early Childhood Education Providers

Beginning in 1997 a consortium of colleges and business partners developed skill standards for Family Child Care Providers, Infant and Toddler Specialists, Early Childhood Teachers, and School-Age Care Professionals.  Skill standards are research based and the research comes from the people doing those jobs.   During those years focus groups were held for each of the 4 jobs with a panel of providers who had been recommended from various sources. Each group, led by a facilitator, identified 6 to 8 Critical Work functions in their job (as a Family Child Care Provider, or other…) They also identified the key activities or tasks under each critical work function, plus competencies, performance standards, etc.   After the focus groups did their work, the results were sent to other providers in the job for validation. Materials, curriculum, etc. have been developed based on the Skill Standards work.

From these books the Self Assessment documents were created. Not only can they be used for providers to think about their own knowledge and skills for their job and to develop a professional development plan as they identify their strengths and weaknesses, they can also be used by supervisors to do evaluations and give feedback.
