The education curriculum provides the skills and knowledge to teach and guide school children in preschool through 12th grade. Students who successfully complete Washington State University’s preparation program and pass the WEST-E test will receive a Residency Teaching Certificate from the State of Washington. The early childhood education offering under the human development major provides a residency teaching certificate with primary endorsements in both early childhood and elementary education. An endorsement for Special Education is also offered.

Human Development is the study of how children, youth, adults, and families develop, change, and face challenges throughout the life span. An undergraduate degree in human development prepares for a successful career in a variety of human services and/or educational settings. There are many concentrations available in which to specialize your human development degree.

This program addresses the complex ways in which child development is influenced by biological, family, neighborhood, school, and community factors, and how this knowledge can be applied to designing innovative and effective programs for young children and their families.

The family studies specialty of the human development major prepares students for careers in institutions and community agencies that provide services to families. This program focuses on family development through the lifespan and applies this knowledge toward designing innovative and effective programs for children and their families.
